What Are The Symptoms Of Gynaecological Cancer?
There are four major gynecological cancers (cancer of the ovaries, uterus, cervix, and vulva). The symptoms vary according to the type. Although it is impossible to list every symptom that might indicate a gynaecological cancer, the following may help you guide yourself towards a diagnosis.
1. Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding
In general, vaginal bleeding is considered abnormal if it occurs when not associated with a woman's period. Different types of abnormal vaginal bleeding include:
- Post- menopause bleeding
- Post-coital bleeding is rare but should be evaluated further.
- Menstrual bleeding between periods (intermenstrual bleeding)
2. Abnormal Vaginal Discharge
Normal vaginal discharge can vary during the menstrual cycle. It is typically clear and odorless but may be particularly noticeable during ovulation (when the egg is shed from the ovary). You should report abnormal vaginal discharge to your physician.
3. Abdominal Swelling
All women will experience abdominal bloating and swelling at some point in their lives, but for some this symptom can be a sign of other health problems. Common minor bowel disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome can cause this symptom; however, if you are a woman in her late forties or older and experience this symptom for the first time, it may be due to ovarian cancer.
4. Itchy vulva
The vulva is the outer part of the female genitals, which includes the labia (lips) and the opening to her vagina. The skin on her vulva is quite sensitive and itching is quite common, particularly in older women. Itchy skin on the vulva can be due to dryness, eczema or psoriasis, all common skin conditions. However it is vital to address any itching because, although it usually does not result in anything serious, the itching may be a symptom of vulval cancer. Vulval cancer usually causes a lump or an ulcer but itching can also be a symptom .
