Signs, Types and Causes of Mental Illness in Children

Mental illness is a disease or condition that influences the way a person thinks, feels, behaves, and/or relates to others and to his or her surroundings. Although the symptoms of mental illness can range from mild to severe and are different depending on the type of mental illness, a person with mental illness cannot simply will the symptoms away. Mental illness is not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities.

Signs of Mental illness in children

Symptoms of mental illness are varied and different for each person. Sometimes, symptoms of a mental health disorder appear as physical problems, such as stomach pain, back pain, headache, or other unexplained aches and pains.

Many children suffer from more than one mental disorder at the same time. It's not uncommon for a child to have a combination of depression and an anxiety disorder, or depression and ADHD.

Some of the most common symptoms of mental illness in children include:

  • Excessive worrying or fear
  • Persistent nightmares
  • Persistent disobedience or aggression
  • Frequent temper tantrums
  • Severe mood swings
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Problems with friends or social withdrawal
  • Changes in academic performance

Types of mental illness in children

Some types of mental illness in children include:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD):- Autism is a developmental disability that impacts social skills and communication. It also often involves repetitive behaviors. The symptoms and severity vary greatly, but typically include difficulty with social interaction and verbal or nonverbal communication

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD):- People with ADHD have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), and in some cases, are overly active

Anxiety disorders:- Anxiety disorders involve excessive fear or worry, and physical symptoms such as trembling, muscle tension, headaches, or nausea.

Causes of mental illness in children

The causes of mental health disorders are complex and vary across each individual. A combination of genetic, environmental, and developmental factors influence whether someone develops a mental illness.

Risk factors include:

  • Family history of mental health problems
  • Traumatic childhood experiences like abuse or neglect
  • Difficult life circumstances (poverty, loss of a loved one, family instability)
  • High stress levels
  • Having other physical or mental health conditions

Conclusion

Research shows that untreated mental illness in children can have a far-reaching impact. It may affect their learning, social interactions and behavior, emotional well-being, development, and daily life. Children may be unable to learn or understand information they are taught or once were able to grasp. In other cases, they might become withdrawn or isolated, preferring solitude over interaction with family members and schoolmates. They might also lash out aggressively at others when angry or frustrated. The earlier mental illness in children is detected, the better their chances of receiving treatment. The sooner a diagnosis is made; the sooner treatment can begin. This can help ensure that children reach their full potential for success in school and in life.
